Our Article for the Utah Farm Bureau News

The newspaper features a young couple with their story every month. All of the YF&R state committee members take a turn writing an article about themselves for the newspaper. It was our turn for the August paper.

Our story written by both Brandon and I : I grew up as a city girl who thought all farmers were old and that farming was a thing of the past. I bought my groceries at the store and never gave it a second thought. Then at the age of 26, I moved to Corinne and noticed all the farms around me. It was there that I fell in love with the slower way of life out in the country and hoped that one day I would find myself a young single farmer, but I still didn’t think they existed. Lucky me, I met my farm boy 2 years later. Brandon was too busy to take me out on a second date, so I rode with him in the tractor while he bailed hay, and he gave me a tour of the dairy afterwards. Experiencing all that for the first time, I was totally swept off my feet. I could picture myself spending the rest of my life with Brandon and being a part of the farming lifestyle he lived. I learned very quickly that I needed to buy the appropriate shoes first.
Brandon was introduced to farming at a young age when he started going to the farm everyday with his step-dad. Growing up in Cache Valley, and living 40 miles away from the farm they stayed at work until the work was done. Working those long hours Brandon learned early on about sacrifice and hard work. They ran 300 acres of alfalfa and grain on the side of his step-dad’s full time job at Miller’s. Brandon gained a great love and respect for tractors, trucks, and tilling the ground. At age 14, his step-dad quit his day job and bought a dairy in Lewiston, Utah. There Brandon spent his days milking and feeding cows, and taking care of farm ground in between. Unfortunately, the dairy didn’t work out so the cows were sold a few years later. Then Brandon moved to Ogden where he found a new job at Gibson’s Green Acres in West Weber Utah. Because it’s what he knows and loves, he’s been there ever since.
When Brandon started at Gibson’s Green Acres in 1998 it was a 300 cow dairy, and was a 500 acre corn and alfalfa farm operation. In his early years at Gibson’s, his mornings consisted of feeding and milking the cows, and also herdsman responsibilities. Then he spent his afternoons out in the field farming where his real love and passion was. Eventually, as the herd grew to 1,500 Holstein cows, 1,000 acres of corn, and 400 acres of hay, so did the need for a full-time crop manager. This position was a natural fit for Brandon. For the last 6 years, he’s been able to do what he’s always dreamed spending his days in big green tractors, tilling the earth, and providing quality feed for the cows.
As a crop manager in Weber County, one of Brandon’s greatest challenges in a populated area is finding enough ground to provide adequate feed for the cows. There are several other dairies in our county that have been here a long time, they’re thriving, and have plans to continue farming in Weber County for many years to come. As the economy along the Wasatch front continues to thrive, and the housing market continues to grow, farmers continue to lose more and more of the prime farm ground that Northern Utah has to offer. It forces them to travel further and further each year. Gibson’s is currently farming in 3 different counties (Box Elder, Weber, and Davis County) about a 60-mile radius. It’s a challenge for them to drive heavy farm equipment through towns and in traffic to several dozen fields that range from 5 to 30 acres each. Brandon envies those that farm 1,500 acres on pivots. In contrast, one of the greatest benefits to farming in Weber County is that we are blessed to have some of the most fertile and highest yielding soil in Utah.
We also feel being a part of agriculture is a great benefit to our family life. Brandon tries to involve our kids in his work whenever he can. We have a blended family (yours, mine, and ours type) with a total of 6 children. Baylee is 12; she shows a steer or a lamb in the fair every year. Baylee loves to go with her Dad to shuttle trucks from field to field because she gets to drive. Abbee is 10; she is the dancer in the family. Abbee also had fun being involved in 4-H and showed a lamb last year. Kalyssa is 9; she is my mini-me. She is a little mom and wants to take care of everybody. Kalyssa loves her newest “baby”, a lamb, her first 4-H project. William turns 4 this month; he is our only son. He is Brandon’s mini-me. He too loves tractors, trucks, and farming. If Will had it his way he would go with his Dad to the barn every day. Paisley and Emmy Lou are fraternal twins and look nothing alike. They also have a birthday this month and will be 2 years old. Paisley loves to cuddle. She’ll sit on anyone’s lap for hours and be perfectly content. Emmy is a wiggle worm. She is constantly exploring her surroundings and making messes. Both of them already point out trucks and tractors they see on the side of the road and call every animal a cow.

For me, switching from the city life to a farmer’s wife was an easy decision. Country folk are humble, hard working, and committed individuals. Brandon is rarely home most of the year, and I feel like a single mother a lot, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love knowing all my neighbors and their families, the beautiful open fields around me, the smells of the dairy, and having no tall buildings or sidewalks in site. The best lesson the farming life has taught me is the deep pleasure of sacrifice – Brandon works long hours, which requires more of me here at home with the kids, but we do it for the sake of a better life for our children where we can teach them the value of hard work and the many other character building experiences you don’t get in the city. Plus, I can’t think of any other occupation where our kids can tag along with Dad at work whenever they want to. We’ll always be a part of the Ag industry. This is where our heart is. THE END.

Brandon was chopping hay today. We met up with him to take a family picture for the article by the swather. The dairy is in the background, but its kinda small to see.

Baylee and Emmy say hi to a new calf at the dairy.

A Broken Garage Door

I heard a loud noise outside the house this morning. When I quickly ran out the front door this is what I found...

Kalyssa drove a 4-wheeler into the garage door!!!

Bailee, Kalyssa's (much older) friend, picks her up with the 4-wheeler most mornings for them to work and feed the lambs at the barn. When they were done, Kalyssa asked Bailee if she could drive, and assured Bailee she can handle it. Well... her judgment was off today. She was going too fast and couldn't stop the 4-wheeler in time and ran into our garage door pretty hard. Luckily no one was hurt.

My Yukon takes up the full length of the garage and its parked right behind the door. She hit it off-center so the door bent around the bumper and didn't damage the Yukon at all... Whew! That was close!
We had someone come out a few hours later to look at it and give us an estimate on the damages and costs to have it fixed. Unfortunately, this type of door isn't made anymore, so we can't just replace a couple bent panels like we hoped. We have to replace the whole door for $595.00 + $50.00 for labor fees. OMGosh! Thanks goodness for the "emergency fund" we've had stashed away... cause this is our first emergency. But Kalyssa will have to pay for a portion of it with her lamb money she gets from the fair this year... AND no driving 4-wheelers until she gets some more lessons from Brandon.
The only good thing out of this is our new garage door will be nicer and an almond color to match our house better instead of this old ancient brown I've been wanting to paint over since we moved in. It will take 2 weeks to get here, but whatever. :)

Then later in the day, I heard the huge fan on our air conditioner freeze up and it was making a really loud screeching sound until I shut it off! Really!!!? ANOTHER big, expensive repair?! We leave for a Farm Bureau convention in the morning... I guess we'll deal with it when we get home in a couple of days. Ugh.

Abbee's Birthday Party

We had a family birthday party for Abbee tonight. She is turning 10 years old on Thursday!

Make a wish!

Mmm... raspberry cheese cake.

Avrie likes it. :)

Lorenzo and my Mom. They come to every party we have... they're great that way.

Grandma Mitzi made it too! She was already in town helping Grandma Dixie, so it worked out perfectly.

Paisley and her Grandma Mitzi.

Emmy getting messy with cake. She starts out using her fork, but figures her fingers get the job done easier after a while.

Abbee opening her birthday presents. Earlier today, I did Abbee's nails Gelish. She picked a cute neon orange and pink. A girl has to have cute nails for all her birthday parties this week, right?! :)

Will is making funny faces cause he is just being Will and likes to make people laugh.

Mini Party for Abbee

Lana and her family can't make it to Abbee's birthday party we're having tomorrow night, so she invited us over tonight for a mini party with her. I dropped off the kids at Lana's while Kalyssa and I went to work the sheep at the barn. Brandon and the guys were all gone to dinner for Kole's bachelor party. I sent my camera with Baylee to take some pictures at Abbee's fun mini party...

Lana gave the kids cup cakes and ice cream.

This is one of Willie's favorite things to do at Lana's house. He knows right where her toy trucks are. :)

Shannon, Katie and Harper are here for the party too.

The twins are pushing each other around.

Abbee got a white board for her birthday from Lana and her family. She will have fun playing school and church with this for sure!
Thank you Lana... the kids reported they had fun! :)

Pretty Nails

The older girls painted the little girls nails today...

Baylee painted Emmy's nails and toes pink.

Abbee painted Kambrie's nails and toes. She is a cute little girl I tend on Monday's.

Kalyssa painted Paisley's nails and toes. Kalyssa said Paisley picked her own colors.

I don't paint the twins nails ever cause I barely have time to give myself a manicure once a month. The twins loved their cute nails and they held still really well... maybe I'll start painting them since they liked it.

Gavin's Farewell

Grandma Mary Ann and Gavin
Gavin is Brandon's nephew... it was his farewell today. He is leaving on Wednesday for his mission to Tempe, Arizona.

4 generations :)

Brandon's sister, Heather, with her 3 boys.

Gavin and his cute girlfriend.

The twins were burning up while we ate lunch at the park after church. Brandon poured water on their heads to cool them down... they loved it. :)

Warren 5K

I ran the Mosquito Day Bites 5K in Warren this morning. It was the first 5K I've ran this year. I ran it at 23:01, beating my personal record... way cool. I got 2nd place in woman's over-all. The prize was a t-shirt and some candy in a water bottle. It was a small town free 5K. I love those kind. :)

Working the Lambs

Bailee is on Kalyssa's 4-H team. She has shown lambs in the fair for the past 6 years. The two of them mostly care for the 4 lambs... feeding and walking them together. Bailee is teaching Kalyssa everything she knows. :)

Kisses...

Bailee is showing Kalyssa how to "set-up" her lamb and make him "push". The fair is 4 weeks away! Still got lots of work to do.

Leading Her Lamb

Kalyssa was leading her lamb without the halter tonight. Her lamb needs to get used to this, cause kids can't use a halter during the Lamb Show at the fair. Her lamb resisted and was fighting it, but she pulled him with everything she had to show him she is in charge. She did great and didn't give up when he put up a fight. I was so proud of her.

Kalyssa is spreading fresh saw dust to bed the lamb's stall with. I have to take pictures of everything Kalyssa does for her lamb project to put in her portfolio. She'll be judged on her portfolio and everything she's learned this year.

The Holy Ghost

I heard Willie saying in a spooky voice, "Hooolyyy Ghooost, Hooolyyy Ghooost". I found him walking around the house with a blanket over his head.

He must think all ghosts are the Holy Ghost. LOL. Now I know that Will really does pay attention to what he's taught. Haha. That's good stuff.

Baby Dolls

I looked over at Will and saw him putting these baby boy dolls on the couch with pillows and blankets.

LOL... he won't play with the girl baby dolls, but these boy babies must be the exception. Its a good thing Brandon is at work... he wouldn't like this.

Uinta Mountains

Brandon had to work on Independence Day, so we didn't go far from home that day. But he got Saturday off, so last minute we packed up the kids and drove up to the Uinta mountains for the day were its cool and rains just about everyday of the year.

We met up with our friends who have been camping there for a few days. Kent and Lana let us go for a ride in their RZR.

Will is obviously having a ball...

...and these two also. :)

Go Daddy Go!

Joe and Evette lead the way for us to follow.

Kelle and Kole were with us too. Brandon wanted this picture of them to spread roomers... to show they had a baby before their wedding. LOL. {its actually Paisley, who is fast asleep!}.

Willie fell asleep in my lap on the ride...

Emmy is sleeping on Kalyssa's lap. Kalyssa put the cooler under her arm to support Emmy's heavy head. Haha.

Cheese!

Back at camp.... Katie and her TOO CUTE baby, Harper.

Little Harper is Lana's 2nd grandbaby... and has 2 more on the way! Wow! Their family is growing fast all the sudden. It's awesome.

LOL... ohmygosh! The twins are so dirty.
After our ride, I wiped down the kid's faces and hands, and they are filthy again. I could not keep them clean!

The kids piled into Joe's RZR and buckled up to pretend they were on a ride together. Will was the driver. Harley is so cute, she told Will he was the Daddy, and she was the Mommy, and the rest are the kids while they played. Will's first time playing house. Haha so cute.

Kent and Lana took Will for a ride.

Kelle took the other kids so Brandon and I could ride our dirt bikes around. We took off for about an hour. It was fun.

Kole and Riley got the fire going so we could make s'mores. Will is so tired! Haha. Then it started pouring rain.

Riley ripped a HUGE hole in his shorts earlier today when he bent over. They were cutting trees with the chainsaw for firewood to take home. Riley burned them in the fire, and took his hat off to show respect for his old shorts. He's funny. :)

The rain showed no sign of letting up... it was about 9 o'clock anyway. We packed up and convoyed home with Riley and Kole. The kids all fell asleep in the truck after 5 minutes. They played hard today.
